Thank you for your support

Many thanks to you all for your support during the year. It has been wonderful that your children have been able to begin bringing their Chromebooks home with your support. Your children can continue reading and writing over these long holidays through the Summer Learning Journey blogging programme. I look forward to reading any posts that they publish.

If you were unable to make it to prize-giving on Thursday, here are some clips from the day:

As you know, I am moving to Point England next year but will be able to keep in touch with your children's learning through their blogs.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and relaxing holiday!

Ka kite ano!

TLN Student: a new system to access wifi outside school

As you know, it has been difficult for some of your children to connect their Chromebook to the internet at home using the Tamaki Learning Network (TLN).

A new network, TLN Student, has been created to make things easier for everyone.  TLN Student has been set up on your child’s personal Chromebook - but only for your child’s school email account.   Your child does not need a password to access TLN Student on their own Chromebook.

We will try the new system today.  At home - after 3:00pm - your child will need to:

  • Shut down their Chromebook and then turn it on again
  • Log into their school Google account
  • Select the wifi network TLN Student

If there are any problems, I will find out from your children!

Latest news from Room 10

It has been a very exciting and busy week in Room 10!

Firstly, we had a wonderful trip to Sylvia Park on Wednesday to watch the 9th Manaiakalani Film Festival and our own class movie, Gotta Read 'Em All, on the big screen. A great adventure! Thank you all for continuing to support your child's learning by leaving positive comments about our movie on the class blog. Ka mau te wehi!

Also, our Year 5 students in Room 10 now have the opportunity to learn at home using their personal Chromebooks. Thank you to our whānau who visited during the week to make this happen and to check out what Cybersmart learning looks like in action.

Manaiakalani Film Festival 2016

Do you want to come and watch the evening showcase of the Manaiakalani Film Festival?  It's happening next Wednesday, 9th November, at Hoyts Sylvia Park from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  Our Room 10 movie, Gotta Read 'Em All, will be shown at this event.

Your children will watch one of the daytime sessions as a school group. However, the movies at the evening showcase are a selection from all the Manaiakalani schools.  If you would like to go to this event, please book tickets through this film festival information page. The tickets cost $2 each.  If you call your group Ruapotaka, we will be seated together.  You will need to make your own way to Sylvia Park and back home again.

Separate notes will go home to the families of our two presenters.

Quality blog comments

Your amazing children are creating short videos using their Chromebooks to share why and how blog-commenting is important to them. Here are two finished examples.

As part of their learning at home next week, they will ask you to check out their blog and write a quality blog comment about one of their blog posts.

There are still opportunities for you to do some Chromebook training with Yayleen, Manaiakalani's Whānau Learning Kaiarahi, if you would like your child to bring their Chromebook home more often.

Further whānau training!

Two more families have taken the opportunity to do some whānau training with Yayleen to learn more about Chromebooks and support learning at home. Fantastic!

Pupuke and Solomone are really excited that they can take their Chromebooks home more often.

There is a little bit of a problem with Chromebooks coming home at the moment, however. Although we are now back at Ruapotaka and working out of the library, the Chromebook cases are in Room 10 and will have to stay there until the asbestos risk is removed.

Monday 5 September 2016

School closed tomorrow!

I am really sorry that your children couldn't bring their Chromebooks home today.  We want to keep them safe while we are out of Room 10.

Whether running with an egg and spoon, throwing a gumboot, jumping, playing badminton or kicking a soccer ball, everyone had fabulous time and showed outstanding sportsmanship.

Our first whānau training session

Alexandra was really excited today when her mum came into school for some Chromebook training with Yayleen,  Manaiakalani's Whānau Learning Kaiarahi. Now that her mum has learnt a bit more about the kawa of care, Alex is able to take her Chromebook home more often.

What is a Chromebook?

A group of students created a screencast to tell you a little bit about a Chromebook and why we use these devices rather than another kind of laptop or tablet. If you want to know anything else, please leave a comment!

Holiday Blogging Programme

Rachel Williams from the University of Auckland is running an online holiday blogging programme for learners in the Manaiakalani area from Saturday 9th July until Sunday 24th July. There are daily activities about the Olympic Games. Rachel has talked to your child's class at school so they know where to go and what to do on her website if they want to get involved. If your child blogs after completing an activity, they can earn points. Prizes will be awarded in Term 3 for the most active bloggers!

Although your child will not have their Chromebook at home during the holidays, they can join in the blogging activities on the computers at the library or on a tablet or smart phone at home.

How to get the Chromebooks home more often!

You can be proud that your children are being responsible with their Chromebooks at school. Ka mau te wehi! They have quickly got into the routine of taking their chromebooks home twice each week to keep learning at home. They are remembering to bring the Chromebooks back to school the next morning.

Now there is the opportunity for your child to bring the Chromebook home more often.  For this to happen, you will need to meet with Yayleen Hubbard, the Manaiakalani Whānau Learning Kaiarahi, to have some whānau training. This is the training that we talked about at our chromebook celebration. This training will last for about one hour and Yayleen can come to your house, or meet you at school or at the library. It is your choice! Here are Yayleen's contact details.  She would love to hear from you, and your children would love to bring their Chromebooks home more often!

Thank you to our families and whānau who visited Room 10 yesterday afternoon for our Chromebook celebration to find out about our digital learning and how we use our Chromebooks. It was fantastic to meet so many of you as your children prepared to take their Chromebooks home for the first time.

I am sorry to hear that some of your children had issues connecting to the TLN wireless network last night. We will investigate!
